The Anthropocene is a
crucial period during which human activities have altered some of the boundary
conditions of the Earth system, marking that the Earth may have entered a new
geological era. The environmental effects of human activities are a long-term
development process. Therefore, revealing the historical background of the
Anthropocene is a prerequisite for clarifying the debate on the starting time
of the Anthropocene. China has a long history and a large population, and there
are significant spatial and temporal differences in human activities and their
environmental effects, which urgently require in-depth and systematic
comprehensive analysis and research to explore the connotation of the
human-land relationship.
In
order to more quickly, accurately and systematically summarize the historical
process of human activities in the Holocene in China and their interactions
with environmental changes, and to provide diversified knowledge services for
relevant research achievements such as interdisciplinary integration in the
context of the Anthropocene, "Advances in Earth Science" specially
launches the column "The Holocene: The Historical Background of the
Anthropocene", with Professor Huang Xiaozhong from Lanzhou University
serving as the chief editor of the column. It is planned to be published in the
first half of 2024 (as a regular issue).
We
sincerely welcome experts and scholars in related fields to actively submit
manuscripts!
I.
Scope of Papers for the Column (Including but Not Limited to)
This
column aims to, on the basis of a comprehensive analysis of the Holocene
climate change records and the historical background of global warming,
systematically summarize the historical process of human activities in the
Holocene in China and their interactions with environmental changes. By
combining archaeological data, historical document records, environmental
archaeological evidence, geological and biological records, etc., it clarifies
the consistencies and particularities of the characteristics of climate change
in the Anthropocene compared with the Holocene climate background, analyzes the
evolution process of the impact of human activities in the Holocene in China on
the environment, and evaluates the degree and scope of the transformation of the
environment by human forces during key periods, in order to provide key clues
and scientific basis for the historical background of the Anthropocene.
