Artificial Intelligence-Generated Content (AIGC), represented by ChatGPT, is transforming traditional academic research and paper writing. For the purpose of upholding academic integrity and research transparency, Advances in Earth Science hereby issues the following statement:
-
In principle, the journal will not accept paper submissions where AI tools are included in the list of authors. Meanwhile, references should not include papers that list AI as an author. Authors must be natural persons who can take responsibility for the authenticity, completeness, and scientific validity of the paper content. If it is discovered that the main content of a paper is generated using AI tools, the paper will be treated as a case of academic misconduct.
-
If AI tools or AI-generated content are used in the process of paper writing—including but not limited to using AI tools for data collection and analysis, creating images or graphic elements in the paper, generating program algorithms, producing text, or polishing writing—authors must clearly state the type of AI tool used, the detailed process of use, as well as its role and contributions in the "Data Sources", "Methodology", or "Conclusion" section of the paper. This is to enable reviewers and the editorial office to evaluate the originality of the paper. Papers deemed to be suspected of academic misconduct will be directly rejected or retracted.
-
Scientific research must strictly adhere to the principles of scientificity, rigor, standardization, originality, and innovation, abide by the bottom line of academic integrity, practice the norms of academic ethics, and comply with publishing ethics. As a core training approach for research capabilities and an important vehicle for demonstrating such capabilities, paper writing involves the systematic organization and professional presentation of research results. There is no shortcut in this process, and opportunistic practices are utterly unacceptable. It is expected that all researchers will always adhere to academic standards, uphold academic ethics, rationally and appropriately use information tools as a strong support for academic research, and conduct high-quality scientific research in a solid manner.
