Two Types of Normal Faulting and Interplaying Mode between Them within the Context of Foreland

Abstract

Rifting normal faults which commonly constitute the base of the subsequent foreland strata and flexural faults coexist in many foreland basins. Flexural faults acting within the homogeneous and non-stratified plate commonly take on steep, planar fault plane form. Those within the heterogeneous and stratified plate usually present the ramp-flat form. There are three types of interplaying relation and corresponding stress distribution between the rifting normal faults and flexurial normal faults. The flexural faults of Type one confined in continental marginal stratal sequences; Those of Type Two can extend into the rifting strata and acting based on those rifting normal faults; Those of Type Three exist in direct relation with rifting normal faults although its extending similar to the Type Two. These three types exert different influence on porosity-fissure system, act with different stress distribution and influence the flow especially the hydrocarbon furtherly. Eventually the similar thickness changes across the rifting normal faults and flexural faults can attribute to their difference of sources.
