A new strategic plan was put forward by National Ccenter for Aatmospheric Rresearch (NCAR) in November 2005. The Earth system research is in the central position characterized in the strategic target and priority fields not only in the scientific research activities, but also in education and observation system in the plan. For example, the goals for scientific research are aimed at the knowledge on the effect and the precise prediction to the evolution of Earth system, whereas the research priorities include the natural variation of Earth and sun, interaction between components in the Earth system, prediction to the system and the relationship between human activity and the evolution of the Earth system, respectively. The focus in Earth system research can be used for reference for the research of atmospheric science and Earth science in China. Meanwhile, it will also promote atmospheric scientists to survey the discipline's development out of traditional weather and climate conception at higher scientific aspect.
