Abstract

To establish long-term high quality seismic stations is an important part of the global seismic observation.  DSDP/ODP provide to be the only scientific program that could enable such an operation as to penetrate the soft sediments and to install the seismic stations in the hard rock. This article presents examples of how ODP Legs succeeded in establishing such borehole stations and obtained some interesting results. In order to observe plate boundary seismicity, two borehole stations were installed offshore Northern Japan with broadband seismometers, in combination with land stations. Topics such as broadband borehole stations in the Western Pacific and marine seismic signals and noises are also discussed. 
