Abstract

Chemical weathering plays an important role in many aspects of geological and environmental processes and is of great significance in both theoretical study and practical application. Study on geochemical behavior of trace elements during weathering can not only provide significant insight into a lot of worldwide earth science problems, but also shed light on solving some ecological and environmental problems that are closely related to mankind's living. Consequently, more attention is being paid to research on chemical weathering of the Earth crust. The physicochemical processes leading to in situ production of the detrital soil components and the release and mobilization of rare earth elements (REE) during weathering are welldocumented. From all these studies, it becomes evident that the REE mobility is mainly controlled by two factors, the climatic weathering conditions and the stability of the primary REE carrying minerals, and both geochemical and microbial factors control the abundance, distribution and form of REE during weathering and soil formation. The study contents and latest progress of REE geochemistry during chemical weathering are summarized in this paper, including aspects of REE distribution features in weathering crusts, formation cause of Ce anomaly, modes of occurrence and migration species of REE, and factors influencing geochemical distribution and migration of REE during chemical weathering. At the same time, the main methods of studying REE behavior during chemical weathering are briefly reviewed. Finally, it is particularly emphasized that the study on the effect of organic matter and microbes on REE behavior is an important study perspective in the future.
