Abstract

Environmental sedimentology places stress on the study of interaction between human activity and sedimentary cycle including weathering, erosion, sedimentation and early diagenesis, and its goal is to seek a better way though which humankind and Mother Nature can be developed concordantly. Now, global contamination of sediments in rivers, lakes and oceans becomes more and more serious. Sedimentologists should concern with it, and make their contribution to solve the environmental problems derived from it. In fact, they are needed for assessment of sediment quality and for remedy of a contaminated environment to study(1) the relationship between the spatial and temporal distribution of contaminants and the lithofacies, sedimentary facies and sedimentary system,(2) the behavior of contaminants in the sedimentation and early diagenetic process, and(3) the existing forms of contaminants in sediments.
