Abstract

Carbon dioxide(CO2) geology is one of the frontiers of geoscience. Origins of carbon dioxide in petroliferous basins at least include:①degassing of the undegassed mantle;②degassing of the crustal melt;③thermal decomposition of marine carbonate rock;④thermal decomposition of carbonate cement and⑤decomposition of organic matter. Each of these different carbon dioxide has its special geochemical characteristics. Many studies on CO2 geochemistry show that the carbon dioxides of CO2-high pools in petroliferous basins are from degassing of the undegassed mantle. The CO2 has a type of-4‰(PDB) of the carbon isotope composition. The undegassed mantle doesn' t degas and keeps the gas-rich feature of the primitive mantle and is 99 times of gas content of the degassed mantle. Therefore, degassing of the undegassed mantle is the main source of CO2 in petroliferous basins.
