As one of the application techniques of space geodesy, satellite altimetry represents the development of the intersect subject of geodesy,geophysics and oceanography. In this paper, the development history of satellite altimetry was reviewed, the recent results obtained in geodesy were introduced, and the current study status of satellite altimetry in China and its application prospect were summaried.
