The background of ocean ecosystem dynamics is introduced. Its purpose, task and characteristics are given. Basic problems in the theoretical study of ocean ecosystem dynamics are discussed. Synergy, predictability, catastrophe and system stability are the problems and important content of ocean ecosystem dynamics. The basic concepts of model and simulation of ocean ecosystem dynamics are described. Abstraction and simplification are the feature of modeling. In the end, some points about the study of ocean ecosystem dynamics in China are suggested.
