Abstract

Seismological and geodynamical evidences supported whole mantle convection model, while geochemical ones supported layered convection model. Simple models, no matter whole mantle convection model, or layered mantle convection model, cannot explain all the observations. To reconcile the models and observations, some hybrid models have been proposed, among them, the most influential model is the Lava lamp model. This kind of model is lack of direct observational support yet, but with accumulation of high-resolution data and advances in comprehensive analysis. It is expected that the hybrid models will surely be further improved.
