Karst rocky desertification is the most serious problem of land degradation in karst regions, southwest China. Because of the inherent merits of remote sensing, it is the inevitable method to assess and monitor the degree and extent of karst rocky desertification at large scale. This article firstly reviewed the complexity of karst eco-geo-environmental conditions. Then it focused on the issues of the limitations of remote sensing data and existing methods, validation, and the fundamental reasons for uncertainties of remotely sensed extraction of karst rocky desertification. At last, this article presented and suggested that the new trends of remotely sensed monitoring karst rocky desertification. 
