Abstract: The Beibu Gulf is located in the northern South China Sea and represents a typical southern subtropical marine region, as well as an important area for coral distribution in China. However, systematic taxonomic investigations of gorgonians in this region remain limited, and data on their species composition and distribution still require further supplementation. To improve the knowledge of gorgonian diversity in the coastal waters of the Beibu Gulf, gorgonian specimens were collected from multiple stations at depths of 3-38 m during 2023-2026, mainly through SCUBA diving surveys, supplemented by specimens incidentally obtained from fishing activities. These specimens were subjected to morphological taxonomic identification and distributional data compilation. Taxonomic identification was conducted based on colony morphology, branching patterns, polyp arrangement, and sclerite morphology examined using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). A total of 21 species belonging to 14 genera and eight families were identified in this study, including two species newly recorded from Chinese waters, Verrucella corona Grasshoff, 1999 and Parisis poindimia Grasshoff, 1999, both of which are described in detail. In terms of distribution, the gorgonian specimens recorded in this survey were collected from depths of 3~38 m, with most specimens obtained from shallow rocky reefs or hard-bottom habitats within 15 m depth. Species composition varied among different survey areas, with relatively more taxa recorded from Xieyang Island, Dongluo Island, and Xigu Island. By integrating previous records, a total of 45 gorgonian species belonging to 18 genera and nine families have been documented from the coastal waters of the Beibu Gulf. These results enrich the diversity data of gorgonians in China, supplement the distributional information of gorgonians in the coastal waters of the Beibu Gulf, and provide baseline data for future ecological and resource-related studies in this region.
