In recent years the study of phased array technology for detecting atmosphere has been made great progress, and become a popular aspect of radar meteorology. Phased array weather radar has the characteristics of less scanning time, higher resolution than conventional Doppler weather radar both in time and space. It also has the capability of real-time detection and be able to obtain high quality data. With these characteristics, it will become a “hot point” in the field of weather detection radar. This paper presents detecting technology status of phased array and its evolvement, and new application for detecting atmosphere of phased array technology, and prospects future meteorological application of phased array detecting technology. At a more advanced stage, the upcoming technology challenges and the future development trends are addressed, being useful to the study of phased array weather radar in China.
