LIAO Shun-bao. A STUDY ON MULTI-DIMENSION INFORMATION PLATFORM FOR RESOURCES AND ENVIRONMENT RESEARCH[J]. Advances in Earth Science, 2002, 17(4): 502-507.

Resources and environment information has spatial and temporal features, it consists of various types and can be gained by many kinds of means, so it is multi-dimensional. Existed modern information technology, such as Remote Sensing(RS), Geographical Information System (GIS) and Database(DB) ,has promoted development of resources and environment sciences to great extent, but it is still difficult to construct friendly user interfaces for expression and processing of multi-dimensional information with these technologies. However, Virtual Reality(VR) technology meets this requirements just in time. 
On the basis of describing the features of resources and environment information, the paper puts emphasis on discussing how to construct a new generation of information platform for resources and environment research with modern information technology, especially with VR technology. The functions of the information platform include: (1) search and query of scientific documents, (2) link between spatial data and attribute data, (3) reflection of dynamic changes for resources and environment, (4) conducting routine analysis with models, (5) visualization of 3D geographical environment with VR technology, and (6) data mining. In initial stage, implementation of the platform will mainly rely on VR software, instead of hardwares, such as data gloves, Head-Mounted 3D Display(HMD).
