INTERNATIONAL ACHIEVEMENTS OF STUDY ON FROZEN SOIL MECHANICS AND ENGINEERING—Summary of the International Symposium on Ground Freezing and Frost Action in Soils

2000年国际地层冻结和土冻结作用会议于2000年9月在比利时召开。会议共设6个专题:热质迁移、冻结敏感性和冻胀、力学性质、环境土冻结、工程设计和工程实例。围绕这6个专题,介绍了国际冻土力学与工程方面研究的一些主要进展,既反映了国际冻土力学与工程研究的水平,也代表了21世纪冻土学发展的方向。

The international symposium on ground freezing and frost action in soils was held from September 11 to 13,2000 in Belgium.There are 6 main topics in the symposium:heat and mass transfer,frost susceptibility and frost heave,environmental soil freezing,engineering design and case histories.Papers concerned with heat and mass transfer cover the physical parameters,the forming mechanism of natural gas and hydrate and the pore ice,the theoretical model of heat and mass transfer and its application in engineering etc.To say generally about frost susceptibility and frost heave,there is no obvious breakthrough in basic theory,but more emphasis is put in applications,especially in the improvement of measurement method,so as to get more extensive and accurate data.As to the mechanical property of frozen soil,some enterprising attempts are made concerning the dynamics properties,the mechanical properties of deep frozen soil as well as the quantitative study on structure of frozen soil.Papers on the environemental soil freezing are divided into two parts,dealt with the harnessing of pollution and the influence of the human activity on the environment in permafrost regions respectively.More attention should be paid on this topic in the future,although the authors carried out outstanding study on the problem they were concenrned.The papers in the proceedings show that many scientists are concerned with the engineering design.The papers on this topic cover the very wide engineering problems such as highway,groundwork,side slope and tunnels etc.Finally,the application of artificially frost technique,the base project in permafrost regions and the measurement techniques are included in the case histories.It‘s obvious that the artificially frost technique is widely applied in many geo engineering projects,and some achievements are obtained.However,the basic theoretical achievements are not so flourishing for its strong practicability.In this paper,the main research achievements are summarized on the 6 topics of the symposium.
