NEW TECHNIQUE BREAK OF U-Th DISEQUILIBRIUM AGE DETERMINATION BY THERMAL-IONIZATION MASS SPECTROMETRY(TIMS)

Abstract  

High-sensitive and high-precision U-Th disequilibrium age determination by thermalionization mass spectrometry(TIMS), which has been developed since the middle of 1980’s, has resulted in a revolutionary improvement of isotopic dating techniques. This has obtained significant achievements in palaeoclimate, palaeoenvironment, palaeo-ocean, archaeology and modern volcanism-magmatism studies. This new technique has attracted increasing attentions, and manifests great potential to open up awide range of new applications. Development of TIMS U-Th dating technique as soon as possible in China is of significance to promote the study and application of high-resolution Quaternary geochronology in our country.
