The Division V (Atmospheric Discipline) of the Department of Earth Sciences, the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), has successfully completed the work of application, review, funding and conclusion of General Program, Young Scientists Fund, and Fund for Less Developed Regions in 2021. In terms of program applications, the Division V of Department of Earth Sciences received 1 715 applications for the above mentioned three types of programs in 2021, with an increase of 9.6% over 2020. The number of applications has increased significantly in recent two years, which may be related to the adjustment of atmospheric discipline application code, resulting in the expansion of the connotation and extension of atmospheric discipline. From the perspective of review, the Young Scientists Fund was newly included in the classified review based on the attributes of four types of scientific problems in 2021. The review clarified the positioning of the "supporting technology" section to support programs truly engaged in key technology research and development. In terms of funding, the number of funded projects of Youth Science Fund and Fund for Less Developed Regions funded in 2021 increased by 22.2% and 27.3% respectively compared with 2020. The funding cases selected by experts implied that the "classified review" mechanism can take into account the frontier development of discipline foundation and major national needs, and help high original and true cross projects to stand out. From the conclusion results, 305 projects were concluded in 2020, and the indexes such as published papers were equivalent to those in previous years. This year's review found some problems worthy of the attention of applicants, experts and managers: a small number of applications were not accepted because they do not meet the specifications; individual applications had high similarity for scientific integrity; a very few experts failed to return their review comments on time, and individual review opinions were slightly vague. NSFC attaches great importance to the issue of scientific integrity. In 2022, the atmospheric discipline will be included in the "Responsibility, Credibility, Contribution (RCC)" evaluation mechanism as a reform pilot discipline. Applicants and experts should pay attention to scientific integrity and jointly create a fair and just academic ecology.
