China joined ODP as its first associate member in 1998. Achievements made during the past five years (1998-2002) can be summarized as follows: (1) The operation of ODP Leg 184 in the South China Sea, which was mainly proposed and co-chiefed by Chinese scientists. Post cruise research of Leg 184 by Chinese scientists have contributed to our new understanding of the east Asia monsoon history, cyclicity of climate change and the evolution of the South China Sea. (2) A series of deep sea related research projects are funded by government agencies including National Natural Science Foundation of China and Ministry of Science and Technology. More than 10 institutions from different government agencies as well as universities have been involved in these researches. As a result, the research capacity of these institutions has been strengthened and new promising young scientists have been trained. (3) The past five years have seen the increasing involvement of Chinese participation in ODP. ODP SCICOM and panels held their meetings in China. There is an increasing number of visits to China by ODP-related scientists. Accordingly, more Chinese scientists are represented in ODP and IODP interim panels.
