The authors review various progress since 1998, the beginning of implementation of Knowledge Innovation Program (KIP), in the Chinese Academy of Sciences(CAS), particularly during 1998-2000, the first Phase of KIP, in the field of Solid Earth Sciences, including scientific projects and grant, innovation achievement, overseas and domestic talents attraction, raising of scientific research competitiveness, promotion of the academy-provincial cooperation. The authors also predict certain future emphasis in the field of Solid Earth Sciences in CAS, mainly, establishment of several top level institutes which accord with international criterion; deploying scientific projects in the light of world Solid Earth Science frontiers; strengthening research over the western area, including founding of Institute of QingZang Plateau Research, CAS.
