Fang Wendong,Fang Guohong. THE RECENT PROGRESS IN THE STUDY OF THE SOUTHERN SOUTH CHINA SEA CIRCULATION[J]. Advances in Earth Science, 1998, 13(2): 166-172.

In this paper, the major scientific study results of the Southern South China Sea (SSCS) circulation for the past several years have been generalized. Several main current systems in the SSCS as well as their variations, are described. It is pointed out that the SSCS circulation is driven by monsoons. During NE monsoon, a cyclonic circulation dominates in the western part of the SSCS while a weak anticy clonic circulation in the eastern SSCS. The combination part of these both circulations forms a strong counter-wind current. During SW monsoon, an anticy clonic circulation dominates most of the SSCS, and a cyclonic circulation occurs to the north of the SSCS. The combination part of these both circulations forms a strong off shoreward E-direction current. This paper also discusses the specific variation properties of the SSCS circulation and the formation mechanism of the SSCS gyres.
