Chen Jingsheng,Yin Yujun. GLOBAL STUDY OF GEOCHEMICAL BASELINE AND ITS PROGRESS IN CHINA[J]. Advances in Earth Science, 1991, 6(2): 36-39.

This paper is to introduce the progress in both programs International Geochemical Mapping and Investigation on Background Data for Concentration of Elements in Soils of Mainland, China.
International Geochemical Mapping (IGM) project, IGCP project259, was launched at the first V. M. Goldscmidt Conference in Baltimore USA in May, 1988 and recognized as a baseline component in Global change studies at the first meeting of the Scientific Advisory Council For the IGBP in Stockholm in October, 1988. In brief, the objective of the project is to facilitate for the production of surficial geochemical maps of the world, to complement existing geological and geophysicsl maps, and to provide baseline geochemical information of use in global-change, environment, agricultural and health studies as well as geology.
A national extensive program, "Investigation on Background Data for Concentrations of Elements in Soils of Mainland, China" has been conducted since 1986. This multi-institutional and disciplinary program has following objectives:1)estimate the range of element abundance in soils througnout Zainland, China;2)compile the serial maps on element comtents in soils of China; and 3)study regional variations in abundance of elements in soils and the relatolnships of elemental leves with parent rocks, climate and soil formation.
Arthur G. Darnley, leader of IGM project, wrote to one of the leaders of the program conducted in mina professor Chen Jingsheng "The investigations you are making with respect to wide spaced sampling relate to a crucial part of IGCP259",
So far, the programe conducted in China has achieved its purpose as expected.
