The global human population are not uniformly distributed on Earth’s landmasses spatial distribution of population means the variations of human population in terms of quality and quantity on Earth surface. In traditional studies, Spatial distribution of population were represented on administration unit levels, and population data were collected about every ten years with statistical methods.
With the development of modern techniques, distributing population data with higher spatial resolution are more and more needed to meet the requirement of “Digital Earth” study. The recent availability of high resolution remote sensing data and image processing methods now make it possible to achieve these goals.
Distribution of population is influenced by many factors such as land-use types, demology, regional ecology, and so on. Integrated analysis of remote sensing data and geophysical data give much help to quantify the spatial relationships between population and basic geophysical parameters related to continental physiography and climate. Supported by case study in China using state census data of 1995 together with landuse data derived by Landsat TM images, it was found the population density is directly related to land use types. Selected areas of five main landuse types as main factors, a redistributing pattern had been established for Chinese rural areas. Methods and main algorithms used in these studies were presented in the paper. Characters and prospect of this study were also discussed.
