The 2016 Ocean Science Meeting——Air-sea Interactions and Upper Ocean Processes

The 2016 Ocean Science Meeting——Air-sea Interactions and Upper Ocean Processes

The biennial Ocean Sciences Meeting, co-sponsored by AGU, ASLO, and TOS will be held at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans, Louisiana on 21-26 February, 2016. The Program Committee seeks input from members of the ocean sciences community in designing the scientific program. Proposals are invited for tutorial presentations and topical sessions that span a broad array of marine science topics. We encourage ideas with strong interdisciplinary themes that address new and emerging areas of research. The final list of approved sessions and tutorials has been determined by the Program Committee. Abstract submissions will open 20 July 2015 and close 23 September 2015.
The theme for the 2016 meeting is: Ocean Sciences at the Interface. Complex interactions occur at a variety of interfaces and on a wide range of spatial and temporal scales. These interactions are critical for understanding the world around us and implementing informed policies in a global society. The 2016 Ocean Science Meeting will highlight processes at interfaces and how the work at such interfaces advances the study of ocean sciences and shapes the impact of our research on society.
Session ID: 9273
Session Title: Interactions between the Kuroshio and Asian marginal seas
Session Topic: Air-sea Interactions and Upper Ocean Processes
The abstract submission site is now open and now is the time to promote your session!
Tutorials
In response to the positive reception of tutorial talks at the 2014 Ocean Sciences Meeting, tutorial abstracts are also being solicited for 2016. Selected tutorial talks will be grouped into dedicated concurrent sessions by the Program Committee. These talks should be designed to have a broad appeal to participants seeking an overview of a given topic. Tutorial sessions will contain four 30-minute time slots, each consisting of a 25-minute presentation with time for questions and for changeover of speakers. Acceptance notifications for tutorial talks will be distributed in early July 2015. Accepted tutorial speakers will also be allowed to submit an abstract for topical sessions.
Topical Sessions
·         Session proposals must include an informative title (45-180 characters) and brief description of the session topic (limit 200 words). The proposal must identify a chair, to serve as the point of contact and at least one additional co-chair. There is a limit of four chairs for each session. All session chairs and co-chairs must be members of AGU, ASLO, or TOS.
·         Session chairs will be responsible for coordinating the evaluation of student papers, both oral and poster, presented in their session. One session co-chair must be identified during the submission process to serve as the point of contact and coordinate the evaluation process.
·         When submitting a session proposal, authors will be asked to select descriptive keywords from a pre-defined list that best describes the session. These keywords will assist the Program Committee in organizing the scientific program thematically and minimizing scheduling conflicts.
·         Because of the large number of papers expected, we are encouraging scientific content to be presented in poster form as much as possible. To that end, we strongly encourage nominations for poster-only sessions. Posters will be displayed for the entire meeting to maximize viewing opportunities. Poster sessions will consist of one-hour time slots for presentation.
·         There will be no “invited” oral presentations and all speakers will be allotted 15 minutes (including time for questions). However, poster session chairs may designate one invited poster presentation per session.
·         Session chairs should not promise oral slots to potential presenters. Once sessions are finalized by the program committee and allotted presentation slots, session co-chairs will then determine poster and oral presentation assignments from the pool of abstracts assigned to their session.
·         Sessions should be designed to have a broad appeal and to engage international participation. The program committee will not approve sessions that it feels are too narrowly focused and such sessions will be merged or declined.
·         In an effort to promote dialog and integration across the ocean sciences, sessions should encourage the submission of education, outreach, and public policy oriented topics.
·         The chairs of accepted sessions will need to be available between  26 October 2015 and 1 November 2015 to finalize scheduling of the abstracts within their sessions.
