PERSPECTIVES ON GEO-INFORMATIC GRAPHIC METHODOLOGY

Geo-Informatic Graphic Methodology is a new explored direction for geography. This paper discusses its potential potential fields. The authors believe that Graphic Methodology is not only a way for presentation, but also a method of analysis. It integrates cognition, graphs and methods. Firstly, the background of the methodology is summarized from requirements of geography, GIS technique and Strategy of “Digital Globe”. Then, the authors give a general review on application of graphic methods from other fields such as Chinese ancient Fengshui (geomantic) theory, physics, biology and cartology. Combined with the features of information society, the key points are stated on the methodology. According to the current situation of geography, three aspects are regarded as the primary work on the research of the methodology: Geographical spatial units and their hierarchy, image features of geographical units and representation methods of geographical information. In order to find out effective ways of the methodology, the authors mainly discuss three key issues in geography: generalization of geographical objectives, classification of basic geographical information and its representation.
