In the present paper, the author would like to review and express his concern about the current and future state of continental surface water quality, specifically with regard to the
following: 1) natural variability of the chemical quality of continental surface waters and global references; 2) status of river quality monitoring on a global scale; 3) global problem
with water quality as a consquence of socioeconomic development.
