Soil water is a major component of water resources management. The importance of soil water research has been progressively highlighted because soil water is the key variable synthesizing the water balance in the action of climate, soil and vegetation. Soil water heterogeneity is one of the critical scientific issues in soil water study. Water cycle and water balance based on the green water concept concerns readily available soil water. With the development of the soil moisture monitoring technology, precise soil moisture information in various spatial and temporal scales is able to be investigated directly or indirectly. Integrated application of remote sensing, isotope, modeling and point measurement has promoted the recognition of the soil water heterogeneity. In the end, this paper highlights that conversion of the soil hydraulic parameters between measuring point and ecohydrological zone, pattern of soil water heterogeneity and its driving forces, soil water assimilation and scaling techniques will be the focus of soil water research in the near future.
