The first ODP cruise to the South China Sea in 1999 has significantly promoted deep-sea research in China and introduced the Chinese community to the international scientific frontiers. After 15 years, the on-going second IODP expedition 349 marks an enhanced role of China in the international program. The present paper reviews the progress in deep-sea researches in China as a member of IODP over the decade (2003-2013), and looks ahead to discuss the plan of IODP-China in the next decade IODP (2013-2023). It is proposed to develop ocean drilling research activities in this country though three successive steps: to implement 1~2 more CPP expeditions, to provide drilling platform for IODP following the EU example, and to build a new- generation ocean drilling vessel in China in cooperation with the international community.
