The progress and change in research methodology are the driving force of putting geographical science forward. Since the 1990s, as a branch of geographical methodologies, the theoretical and quantitative geography has been progressed in a whole-newly branch-Geocomputation. By using a lot of hardware and software necessary for high-performance computing, it is possible to model and predict the evolution of some spatial-temperal problems in geography. Taking a lot of foreign and native literatures as a base, this paper traces the progress and development of geocomputation in geographical circle in the world, discusses the composition and connotation of geocomputation, analyses the basic characters of high-performance computing, and introduces some successfully exploration and application of high-performance computing in a few inherent propositions in geographical researches including spatial interaction, population and urban evolutionary dynamics. The aim of the paper is to offer some profitable references for starting geocomputational researches in China.
