Reliable radiocarbon dating of Loess-paleosol sequence is not easy, The discrepency of dating results occurred in the previous work because of different dating materials and the laoking of powerful pretreatment. Here, we tested the feasibility of dating terrestrial mollusks fossil shells from the Loess Plateau, calibrated by the modern snail shell. Then; we compare the calibrated fossil shell results with the datings of the soil humin fraction and concentrated pollen in order to evaluate the reliability of the dating terrestrial mollusks fossil shells. If the fossil shell contains only aragonite form and their shell structure is examined by using X-ray diffraction, we shall be able to achieve reliable dating. Our results indicate that terrestrial shells are potentially useful as dating material.
