Global climate has shown a general cooling trend during the Cenozoic period, with alternation of warm and cold climates on orbital timescales. Factors influencing the global climate changes include the external insolation forcing and the internal interactions between different parts of Earth′s system. Revealing the forcing mechanism of the global climate changes requires accurate calculation of Earth′s orbital parameters and reliable reconstruction of well preserved and continuous long climatic proxy records from the deep sea and the continental sediments. IODP Legs 320 and 321 have retrieved a series of profiles of high quality deep sea sediments from the eastern equatorial Pacific, providing such a good opportunity to reveal the regulation of global climate change since the early Cenozoic. We should study the paleoceanographic and paleo-climatic changes in a global perspective.
