With the profound researches of “core region”, “prosperous region” and “spatial polarization”, based on a wider interpretation of the term “marginal”, new research direction on “marginal region” and “marginal process” has been developed: Concerning the ingredients and approaches, it involved the complex interaction of geometrical, natural, economic, social, cultural and behavioral factors; With regard to the spatial dynamics and structural pattern, center periphery model was extended to center periphery marginal region model, with the focus on the regional problems, marginal region were analyzed at different spatio temporal scales and under different thematic aspects. In recent two decades, the foreign geographers have focused their research on the definitions, typologies and basic theories of marginal region and marginal process, the regional response of marginal region to globalization, deregulation and modernization, as well as the development issues of marginal region, which has given us a new angle on the spatial disparities and relationships in Geography. However, the researches on marginal region and marginality are still neglected in China, as a big, fast growing developing country. Under the processes of globalization and socio economic transition, the research in these fields will play an important role in achieving the comprehensive, coordinated and sustainable development of China. 
