Urban recreationspace planningandconstructionhasa longhistory. However, the research was updatedto the 1960sall over theworld, and updated to the 1990s in China. Firstly, the paper focuses on the progress of urban recreation space research of China in the following aspects: recreation space types, recreation space structure and its evolution, appraisal of recreational environment, planning and design, behavior of outdoor recreation of citizens. Based on the analysis, the author makes an objective appraisal of the progress of urban recreation space research of China. There are such disciplines related to the study of the urban recreation space as geography, architecture, urban planning, tourism sciences, economy, sociology. There are more cases studies than theory research. The contents are not widely covered; the concept approach is mainly focused . Secondly, the paper puts forward the opportunities and challenges that faces the urban recreation space research of China. Thirdly, the paper puts forward the major development fields: (1)the theory system is established; (2)the reasonable category system of urban recreation space is perfected;(3)the study on urban recreational physical space and urban recreational social-economic space is integrated;(4)urban recreational social-economic space;(5)the coupling mechanism between urban recreational physical space and urban recreational social-economic space;(6)the technology-economy indexes system of urban recreation space planning and construction;(7) the urban recreation spaace planning and design;(8) the management of urban recreation space.
