Both China's terrestrial and marginal sea systems represent important components of the global carbon cycle. While the Chinese terrestrial ecosystems have been relatively well studied, carbon cycles in Chinese marginal seas are to be better understood. Chinese marginal seas including Yellow Sea, East China Sea and South China Sea represent a major component of the world ocean margin. This paper is attempting to provide an overview of the researches on the cycling of carbon in both Chinese terrestrial systems and marginal seas. Emphases are given to identify key processes that may be responsible for the carbon cycles. Based upon a regional carbon cycle box model that we compiled from updated data sets available, we conclude that there exist substantial unknowns and uncertainties in terms of both fluxes and processes. While we generally lack studies that integrate regional atmospheric-ocean margin land system processes, carbon cycling studies in Chinese marginal seas are particularly needed.
