There are plenty of phytoliths came from higher plants in the sediments of Tertiary and Quaternary. Because the phytoliths sourced from different plants with different morphologic assemblages, not only the strata can be divided and correlated but also the paleo-climates can be restored with the recoveries of paleobotanic communities by the analyses of stratigraphic phytoliths. In the way, a lot of works have been done in the research of Quaternary geology. In addition, the studies of isotope geochemistry of organic carbon in phytoliths can make the dissections of geologicages and paleoclimates quantitative.
