During the past two years, extraordinary progress in synthesis has been made for IGBP.The paper introduces why and how synthesis studies on global environmental changes are developed. Then it outlines the relevant concept, present status, and expects its future directions in the 21st Century of synthesis studies on global environmental changes. Furthermore, synthesis studies of global environmental changes in China are discussed as well.
