TANG Qisheng,SU Jilan. STUDY ON MARINE EC0SYSTEM DYNAM ICS AND LIVING RES0URCES SUSTAINABLE UTILIZAT10N[J]. Advances in Earth Science, 2001, 16(1): 5-11.

This paper presents a brief view to the marine ecosystem dynamics study based on a National Basic Key Research Program titled “Ecosystem Dynamics and Sustainable Utilization of living Resources in the East China Sea and Yellow Sea(EYSEC)”.The presentation of the study includes its significance to the social and scientific development of China, present status, research development tendency, main key scientific questions and the implementation plan of EYSEC.Marine ecosystem dynamics is a multidisciplinary study from fisheries, oceanography, marine biology, which is new and an important part of global change studies.GI OBEC(Global Ocean Ecosystem Dynamics) is an International Program jointly sponsored by SCOR,IOC,ICES,and PICES,which started in 1991. It dedicate to understanding the effects of physical processes on predator-prey interactions and population dynamics of zooplankton in the global climate system and anthropogenic change. The program can be divided into international, regional and country levels. We started China GI OBEC study program in 1997 by a Key Research Project from National Natural Scientific Foundation of China. The national GLOBEC projects focus usually on the important economic marine living species which will help the national economy forward.Prof.Tang Qisheng is the chief scientist of EYSFC and Prof Su Jilan is the scientific supervisor.Implementation of the program is divided into 12 sub—projects covering scientific research of oceanography, ocean chemistry, ocean biology and living marine resources ecology. Our goals of the study on ecosystem dynamics and living marine resources sustainable utilization are to understand structure, function and production of China coastal ecosystem ,make its carrying capacity quantitatively, predict the recruitment of living resources, find a way for the resources sustainable utilization. Our research also develops a theoretical regime of shelf in China coastal region and makes our research forward to the advanced range of GIOBEC study in the world.
