The meaning and research stage of secondary petroleum reservoirs are reviewed comprehensively, and entrapping elements, research technique and methods are analyzed systematically. Fault is considered the most significant factor which impacts the vertical distribution of secondary petroleum pool. Several typical secondary petroleum pool entrapping modes which are controlled by fault are introduced. Besides, with regard to the effect that overpressure leads to the migration and accumulation of oil and gas, two entrapping modes are provided. One is entrapping in the overpressured fluid compartment, and the other is entrapping among the vertical and neighbouring overpressured fluid compartment. The research of secondary petroleum reservoirs are combined with fluid inclusion. The application of fluid history analysis (FHA) technology and geochronology of hydrocarbon accumulation to study secondary petroleum reservoirs forming and evolution is summed up.
