Liu Chenggang, [Ning Xiuren], Hao Qiang, Le Fengfeng. Advances in the Study of Photosynthetically Produced Dissolved Organic Carbon Released of Marine Phytoplankton[J]. Advances in Earth Science, 2010, 25(2): 123-132.

Dissolved Organic Carbon (DOC) is the largest reservoir of organic carbon in marine system, even more important is the labile part, most of which come from the releasing of phytoplankton. In this paper, the research history of phytoplankton DOC release is reviewed. The major research topics in this research area are discussed, which include the ratio of photosynthetic DOC (PDOC) to primary production, the chemical composition of PDOC, the pathway and controlling mechanism of PDOC release, the ecological significance of the extracellular organic matter to heterotrophic bacteria, etc. The current status and deficiency of present research work are analyzed. There are still many scientific questions without uniform understanding in this field, which is a large open field for further extensive studies and improvement of research methods.
