From a viewpoint of global environment study this paper discussed the present status of land degradation and its harmfulness in humid and subhumid zones of East China and necessity and feasibility to study and manage it. Moreover some preliminary ideas for futune study have taken shape in the line of a combination of site studies and regional ones.
